Is an open-plan layout always the dream? For this high-end self-build, we designed a handleless show kitchen that anchors the space without feeling cluttered. By concealing a hidden spice kitchen and layering minimalist textures, we transformed this blank-canvas into a warm, functional, and sophisticated heart of the home.

Show Kitchen & Hidden Spice Kitchen
Designed for a high-end self-build property in collaboration with an independent builder and joiner team, this project was envisioned as a true "show kitchen." The challenge was to create a design that felt grand enough to anchor a massive open-plan space while maintaining the clean, minimalist lines of a modern aesthetic. While the main kitchen serves as the visual centrepiece, it is backed by a full-scale, hidden spice kitchen, allowing for heavy-duty cooking to remain tucked away from the primary entertaining zone.

The Design
To suit the scale of this open-plan ground floor area, we designed a large "wow factor" island, carefully proportioned to the room and finished with waterfall worktop ends on both sides. This project features a "true handleless" style, utilising matt cashmere doors paired with a graphite handleless rail for a sharp, contemporary look. Despite the expansive footprint, it was fundamental that every cabinet remained useful; we prioritised a high ratio of drawers over hinged cabinets to create highly valued, usable storage in every zone.
A defining feature of this minimalist kitchen design is the hidden doorway leading to the spice kitchen. By integrating the entrance into the cabinetry run, there is no exposed doorway to break the visual flow, suiting the sleek, architectural requirements of the home. To balance the soft cashmere tones, we introduced graphite metal-framed glazed cabinets with reeded glass. This adds a sophisticated layer of texture and a secondary colour that perfectly complements the handleless rail, providing a dedicated space to display fine glassware for hosting.

The Details
- Features stone worktop edges that wrap to the floor.
- To ensure a premium finish, we use book-matched veining or single-slab fabrication for total design cohesion.
- Optimised Baking Storage: Wide drawers positioned beneath ovens offer easy access to trays and tins. This layout improves organization while reducing vertical join lines for a seamless, minimalist aesthetic.
- Integrated Feature Lighting: Discrete, routered-out LED lighting under the breakfast bar and inside glazed cabinetry adds depth and highlights the kitchen’s focal points.
- Sleek Venting Hob: By choosing a venting hob, we kept the overhead space clear. The system is cleverly ducted behind cabinetry, sacrificing minimal drawer depth to maintain a clean line of sight.
- Textured Reeded Glass: Graphite-framed glazed cabinets introduce reeded glass and internal lighting. This layering of textures prevents a minimalist palette from feeling flat, adding warmth and sophisticated visual interest.
