The kitchen project that needed to do it all! This stunning Worcester townhouse was a challenge due to how much we needed to design into the space, but now the homeowners love it and I am so happy to be sharing the story of their timeless kitchen for their forever home.

THE STORY
As first time buyers, it was an exciting but nerve wracking prospect doing their very first kitchen renovation. They were struggling to visualise how everything could work and fit in the new single story 4 meter extension they were building. The primary concern was needing to incorporate a highly functioning kitchen layout that allowed enough storage for all cooking equipment, accessible storage for spices and in corners, whilst also incorporating built in appliances, a corner pantry, and their laundry systems. They also love to host, so it was really important the kitchen design was easy in use, organised efficiently, and zoned perfectly for daily use and when cooking for the masses.
Our goal was to ensure the new kitchen felt bright and airy, maximising natural light to avoid the dark spots a single story extension can bring, and to create a warm, inviting environment for the whole family to enjoy.
The Design
The biggest debate was whether to opt for a kitchen island or a peninsular layout for their kitchen layout. They fell in love with having a kitchen island, but once we worked through adding the other must haves in the room, they listened to my advice and opted for a peninsula format to allow ample room to move around, avoid narrow walkways, and to just have a better overall workflow for the design. Although it wasn't the answer they wanted initially, both clients now say how pleased they are that they listened to the advice and opted for a peninsula. They love the space and find that nobody is on top of each other when they are cooking, and holistically the design works much better within the footprint of the extension.
This kitchen was designed to be highly functional and efficient for day to day use. With this in mind, it was important to ‘zone’ the spaces effectively to maximise the space available. We made sure the cooking zone was all together rather than crossing the main walkway, allowed enough worktop space for prep areas and serving up, just logically walking through how each activity will work.
Storage space was also imperative. We were keen on adding purposeful cabinets and not cluttering the space with endless amounts of hinged furniture. To achieve this, we selected an Elica venting hob which provided the gas cooking element they required while allowing the wall above to be kept clear, and meant they could incorporate an appliance garage next to the oven to ensure clutter free worktops. We also crafted a bespoke corner pantry to house all dry goods, meaning all drawers and cupboards in the main cooking area were used for cooking equipment and organisers. Every inch of space has been maximised for this project.
Lighting was also so important with the kitchen being situated towards the back of the extended room, so we needed to account for this in the design decisions made.
The Details
- Timeless style and a neutral colour scheme were central to this design, layering soft tones and introducing character through brass hardware, warm wall colours, and carefully chosen accessories.
- A diagonal corner pantry serves as the perfect hiding place from the day to day madness, providing a prime location to store dry goods and bulk bought items out of sight.
- Cooking on gas was a priority, so we integrated a gas hob with a venting feature that ducts directly outside to avoid losing precious storage in the units below. Townhouses tend to be narrow in design so saving the extra depth here really helpful.
- The appliance suite includes a Samsung oven with Dual Cook technology, creating independent cooking zones alongside microwave functionality for maximum versatility.
- A double Belfast sink with front grooves perfectly suits the timeless aesthetic and provides a practical, deep space to hide dirty dishes while hosting friends and family.
